The DeMythif.AI Winter School is organised by DeMythif.AI, the doctoral programme run by Institut DataIA at Université Paris-Saclay. Launched in 2024 and co-funded by the European Union under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND scheme, DeMythif.AI supports 25 PhD fellows recruited internationally through an open and competitive selection process, and hosted in the laboratories of Université Paris-Saclay and its partner research organisations.

The programme's aim, as its name suggests, is to tear down the "black box" which artificial intelligence usually is. Three questions structure the whole programme: how we can quantify uncertainty, how well we can explain what it does, and how frugal AI solutions can be. Concretely, that means training a generation of doctoral researchers who can say precisely what AI models do, where their limits lie and at what cost they operate. Alongside their own research, the fellows follow a shared training programme of schools, workshops and secondments with academic and industrial partners, in the tradition of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions: research excellence, international mobility and close contact with the non-academic world.

What the week is about

Our Winter School reflects the thematics of the DeMythif.AI doctoral programme. Over five days, the programme will cover four areas developed with the programme's research and industrial partners:

• Uncertainty modelisation
• Simulation-based inference
• Bayesian networks
• Machine learning and HPC resource management  
   

These topics sit at the intersection of statistics, computer science, and the sciences that use AI as a working tool, from energy and climate to Physics and health. They are taught here by researchers who work on them daily, in universities, in national research institutes and in industry. The detailed programme and the list of speakers will be progressively revealed as they are confirmed.

Beyond the lectures, the week is designed for exchange: poster sessions where every participant can present their own work, round tables, career discussions with senior researchers, and a social programme that makes the most of a week spent together on campus.

This school is targeted at PhD students (preference for first- and second-years), working on artificial intelligence itself or applying it in other disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Biology…), in France or abroad.

A limited number of places is also open to postdoctoral researchers, and to engineers and researchers working in industry, who want a week of solid teaching on these subjects and time with the people who work on them. They apply through the same process and are selected on the same criteria; a specific registration rate applies. Around 50 to 60 places are available in total, shared between the DeMythif.AI fellows and the participants selected from the applications received. Selection is made by the school's scientific committee on the basis of a CV and a motivation letter.

At Institut Pascal, on the Paris-Saclay campus

The school will be held at Institut Pascal on the Université Paris-Saclay campus in Orsay. Université Paris-Saclay is one of Europe's leading research universities and the heart of a cluster that brings together universities, grandes écoles and national research organisations across a single territory. Institut Pascal is its dedicated venue for long-format international scientific gatherings, built precisely for the kind of week this school aims to be: a purpose-built auditorium, buffet spaces, and several offices available throughout the school to foster discussions and nascent collaborations around a whiteboard.

Applicants will be asked for a CV and a motivation letter, and to indicate whether they apply as a PhD student, a postdoctoral researcher, or from industry. A registration fee applies to participants from outside Université Paris-Saclay, at a rate depending on their status.
